Academics

Marshall Magnet Elementary School exists to promote the academic and social development of each of its students through a diverse, integrated curriculum emphasizing the arts and sciences. Unique among Flagstaff's schools, Marshall is an arts and science magnet school, meaning we have woven a special emphasis on these key aspects of learning throughout our curriculum. We are proud to have been doing this successfully since the magnet concept began at our school more than a decade ago. We are committed to providing your child with a strong academic program of study, as well as extensive art and music opportunities, and an enhanced science program. Within our tandem arts and science emphases, all of Marshall’s educational programs are dedicated to teaching the whole child.

Marshall is an Art and Science Magnet school, which is made possible through community partnerships. The help and support the school receives from FUSD, annual tax credit contributions, the business community, as well as local, state and federal grants enables Marshall to offer unique opportunities to all students at no cost to our families.

Artist and Scientist in Residence: Students work with artists- and scientists-in-residence on long-term art and/or science integration projects. Past artists-in-residence have included: students working with local artists using technology and writing to create stories using computer graphics, student created masks and corresponding play performances, large mural creations placed all around the school, adventure storytelling, and Japanese Taiko Drumming.

Plus, all students at Marshall receive one-hour long Art, Music, PE, and Computer Lab classes.

  • FUSD’s funding of an Art & Science Integration Specialist, Arizona Community Foundation of Flagstaff's partial funding of Suzuki violin program, The Catherine B. Adel Foundation’s funding of the NAU Suzuki Coordinator, and The Arizona Commission on the Arts partial funding of the 5th Grade Japanese Taiko Drumming Artist in Residency. In addition to program supports, Marshall partners with many local experts and businesses including but not limited to: TerraBIRDS, The City of Flagstaff, The Sunrise Lion’s Club, Young Rembrandts, and more!

  • The Marshall Magnet Councils are composed of educators, administrators, community members, and parents who volunteer their time to promote and improve the Marshall programs. Any interested parent, teacher, or community member who is willing to commit time and effort is encouraged to participate. We meet monthly for one hour.

Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered approach to help struggling learners. Students' progress is closely monitored at each stage of instruction to determine the need for further research-based instruction and/or intervention in general education, in special education, or both. The four main elements of the RTI framework are high quality instruction for all students, tiered instruction/intervention, ongoing student assessment, and family involvement. RTI is not a program. It is a comprehensive system for organizing a district's effort for improving achievement of all students.

The goal of our RTI efforts in the Flagstaff Unified School District is to help coordinate the various district initiatives and obligations in order to best serve students. Whether you're new or familiar with the framework, we encourage you to explore the links to the right as they direct you to some of the latest national information on academic and behavioral RTI. If you have any questions about FUSD's RTI implementation, feel free to contact us.
