Dear FUSD Families,

At Flagstaff Unified School District, we believe that Every Day Counts when it comes to your child’s learning and growth. We want every student to be engaged, happy, and successful — and their presence in class makes a difference every single day. Parents and guardians play a vital role in supporting consistent attendance, which is one of the most important contributors to a child’s success in school and beyond.

Regular attendance helps students keep up with lessons, build strong friendships, and develop important life skills. When a student is absent, it not only impacts their own learning but can also affect the learning of their entire class. We encourage consistent routines and ask families to plan appointments and vacations around the school calendar whenever possible. If your family is experiencing challenges that make attendance difficult, we are here to help.

Illness Guidelines

If your child is sick, you can find guidance on when it is recommended to keep them home on our Health Services page or connect with your school nurse.

Mental Health Matters

We understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. If your child is struggling, please contact your school counselor or visit our Parent and Student Supports page for resources.

Transportation Help

If you have bus transportation questions, please contact our Transportation Department at (928) 527-2300.

All secondary students can receive a free Mountain Line pass for the school year. Students who need a pass can visit the Mountain Line office at 216 W. Phoenix Ave or call (928) 779-6624.

Families may also wish to connect with neighbors or friends to arrange carpools when possible.

If a student is not in class, they are marked Unverified Absence (UNV) until we receive parent communication. If a student is late, they are marked Tardy Unverified (TU) until we hear from you. All absences not verified by parental or administrative authorization will remain unexcused.

Please find below a listing of acceptable reasons for a student to be absent from school that are excusable by their parent or guardian: illness, doctor appointment, mental or behavioral health, homelessness, bereavement, family emergencies, family vacation (up to three (3) days per school year  — absences for family vacation after 3 days will be marked Unexcused), time necessary to process for the armed forces, and out-of-school suspensions. In some instances, school administration may require documentation.

For secondary schools, automated phone calls, emails, and text messages will be sent twice per day — once in the morning and again in the afternoon — to notify parents of any unverified absences or tardies for one or more class periods that day. For elementary schools, families will receive one phone call/email/text in the morning for unverified absences or tardies.

If we have not received parent communication via ParentSquare or phone call for any unverified absences or tardies after 48 hours, the absences will be marked as unexcused.

Families will be notified if your child is trending towards being chronically absent (missing 10 percent of enrolled days for any reason) to identify ways to partner to improve school attendance. Referrals to the Coconino Juvenile Courts for supportive, not punitive, measures may also be made.

Parents and guardians can review their child(ren)’s absences in ParentVUE by logging into the website or app, then selecting ‘Attendance’ from the menu.

We appreciate your partnership in helping your child attend school regularly. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to discover their path and thrive.

Thank you.
